In a dramatic overnight incident at a grocery store in New York City, police shot and wounded a man brandishing a knife, the NYPD reported on Monday. The altercation unfolded at the City Fresh Market in Harlem near 120th Street, shortly after 1:30 a.m.
Authorities revealed that the suspect was wielding a 13-inch kitchen knife and refused multiple commands to drop the weapon. The confrontation escalated outside the store, where the man had previously been ejected following a dispute with another individual inside.
Surveillance footage acquired by Pix11 shows the man pacing near the store’s entrance, brandishing the knife threateningly, while employees took shelter inside the building.
Upon police arrival, the suspect allegedly continued to direct the knife toward the officers, leaving them no choice but to respond with gunfire after their repeated demands were ignored.
Surveillance video obtained by Pix11 captured the man lingering outside the sliding doors and waving the weapon as workers huddled inside.
When police arrived on the scene, the man allegedly kept pointing the knife in their direction before an officer fired.
The knifeman took a bullet to his abdomen, cops said.
He was taken to a hospital for surgery and remains in a critical condition.
Police haven’t yet released his name or what charges he’ll face.
