BIRMIGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — Birmingham police are investigating a shooting after one person was shot and multiple cars were shot into Saturday night.

Shortly after 7 p.m., officers received reports of multiple gunshots at Woodlawn High School, as stated by Birmingham Public Information Officer Truman Fitzgerald. Upon arriving at the scene, officers discovered that multiple vehicles had been damaged by gunfire.

Following discussions with community members, Fitzgerald reported that officers learned of a shootout between two groups. It was also revealed that an adult female had been taken to UAB Hospital in a private vehicle with a gunshot wound. According to Fitzgerald, she sustained serious injuries.

The initial investigation indicated that it was Woodlawn alumni week, during which various events had been held. An argument erupted between two groups, leading one party to retrieve a firearm from their car, resulting in multiple individuals exchanging gunfire.

At least seven vehicles were shot into. Officers are searching for multiple suspects.
