On this date in 1894, French military officer Alfred Dreyfus was found guilty of treason in a court-martial, sparking global outrage over perceived antisemitism. Dreyfus would later be exonerated, bringing justice to a case that had divided public opinion worldwide.

In a pivotal moment during World War II on December 22, 1944, U.S. Brigadier General Anthony C. McAuliffe famously responded with a single word, “Nuts!”, when the Germans demanded his surrender during the Battle of the Bulge. This bold defiance was a turning point in the battle, as Allied forces ultimately overcame the German offensive at a significant cost.
On this day in 1984, Bernhard Goetz, a New York City resident, shot and injured four young Black men on a Manhattan subway, claiming they were about to mug him.
