Ossoff-Platner Parallels Pose New Risks for Susan Collins’ Reelection Campaign

Sen. Jon Ossoff (D-GA) has long struck his critics as overly self-assured, projecting the image of a polished Georgia Democrat who can deliver a polished speech while leaning heavily on lofty talk of unity that, to skeptics, rings hollow.

That criticism resurfaced this week after Ossoff took a sharp and widely criticized swipe at Natalie Harp, a cancer survivor and senior aide to President Donald Trump, during a campaign rally in Georgia. For anyone who missed the moment, here is what Ossoff said:

“He doesn’t want to do the job,” Ossoff claimed during a campaign speech. “He wants to build his ballroom and travel with Natalie on their apparently defenseless flying palace gifted by the emir of Qatar.”

Watch:

The controversy deepened after Ossoff, who is viewed by some as a possible 2028 presidential contender, attempted to explain the remark and insisted he had not been implying an affair. “Well, I’ve heard this particular aide referred to as his security blanket. And I think we could say that about any number of the senior aides in the White House,” he said.

“They’re not telling him what he needs to hear,” Ossoff continued during an “interview” with MS NOW anchor and former Joe Biden press secretary Jen Psaki.
