Parents-in-Law Arrested After New York Times Games Engineering Director Found Shot Dead

Jonathan McKinsey, a New York Times Games engineering executive, was fatally shot Saturday afternoon in Dublin, California. Within minutes, authorities arrested his parents-in-law on suspicion of murder.

McKinsey, 40, was discovered with multiple gunshot wounds in the parking lot of the Dublin Sports Grounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene, the City of Dublin said.

A New York Times spokesperson confirmed to News Outlet that McKinsey was the director of engineering for New York Times Games. He joined the company in January 2023.

The investigation began around 3:08 p.m. Saturday, when a Dublin Police Services sergeant driving near the sports complex saw a man lying in the parking lot and stopped to help.

At roughly the same time, dispatchers received several 911 calls reporting that a shooting had taken place, authorities said.

Officers responding to the scene found McKinsey suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. With assistance from witnesses, they quickly identified and detained two suspects who were still at the location, police said.

Authorities identified the suspects as Shouyong Zhang and Shili Chen, both 77 and residents of Dublin. Officials said the married couple are McKinsey’s parents-in-law.

Zhang and Chen were each arrested on suspicion of murder and booked into Santa Rita Jail, authorities said.

Police said no other suspects remain at large and that there is no continuing threat to the public.

Detectives are investigating what led to the deadly shooting. Authorities have not disclosed a possible motive.

“DPS thanks the witnesses and community members who assisted responding officers; their cooperation was critical to the swift arrest of the suspects,” officials said.

Dublin Police Services did not immediately respond to News Outlet’s requests for comment.
