A Pittsburgh pediatrician was killed and his wife hospitalized after a stabbing during a home invasion at their residence in Edgewood, Pennsylvania, authorities said.
Allegheny County police arrested 32-year-old Elijah Hemingway of Pittsburgh in connection with the attack. Court records show Hemingway has had a criminal history in the county dating to 2016. His latest previous arrest came in July over a burglary reported in February.
He was released without bail in that case.

Prosecutors filed seven additional charges against Hemingway Thursday, including criminal homicide, aggravated assault, burglary and trespassing.
According to authorities, Hemingway entered the victim’s home on Linden Avenue at about 12:30 a.m.

Evans, 46, was pronounced dead at a hospital, while his wife remained in stable condition.

According to his University of Pittsburgh profile, Evans served as medical director of the Pediatric Critical Care Transport Team at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh and was an assistant professor of critical care medicine at the university’s School of Medicine.

Court documents obtained by KDKA say Evans’ wife told investigators that the couple awoke to a man attacking them in bed with a kitchen knife. She described the intruder as wearing only underwear and saying something about “being God,” the station reported. She also said Evans called the attacker “Elijah,” suggesting he may have known him.

The couple’s two children, ages 8 and 12, were inside the house when the attack occurred.
