In a dramatic turn of events near the heart of American governance, U.S. Capitol Police apprehended an 18-year-old man on Tuesday after he brandished a shotgun and sprinted towards the Capitol Building’s west side. The incident unfolded while Congress was out of session, casting a spotlight on security measures around the iconic landmark.

The young man, whose identity remains undisclosed, had parked his Mercedes SUV near the Capitol. After exiting the vehicle, he covered several hundred yards before officers managed to intercept him, ordering him to the ground and averting what could have been a grave situation.

During a press briefing, Capitol Police Chief Michael Sullivan provided key insights into the incident. He detailed that the suspect was outfitted in a tactical vest and gloves, with a Kevlar helmet and gas mask discovered inside his vehicle. The shotgun he carried was loaded, and he possessed additional ammunition, heightening the gravity of the threat.

The authorities are currently investigating the suspect’s motives, examining the possibility that members of Congress might have been his intended targets. Chief Sullivan emphasized that the investigation is ongoing, and the department is actively reviewing video footage of the event. He also called upon the public to come forward with any additional footage to aid in the investigation.

Sullivan said the motive was under investigation, including whether members of Congress were the target. Congress is not in session.

Sullivan said the department has video footage, but he asked the public for any footage they might have of the incident.

“Who knows what would have happened if we wouldn’t have officers standing here?” the chief said, adding that the department had run active shooter drills in almost the identical spot in recent months.

Sullivan said the young man was not known to authorities and described him as not being from the area. The chief said the vehicle was not registered to the suspect, who has multiple addresses.
