Police said the incident was reported around 5:38 p.m. Monday at Washington Park beach.

The child, described as wearing red shorts, was last seen going into the water on the east side of the catwalk, south of the lighthouse.

Witnesses told investigators they saw the child vanish beneath the water.

Search crews continued looking for the child overnight.

The Michigan City Fire Department said dive operations had to be suspended Monday because of dangerous conditions.

Three fire department divers were injured during the search and taken to a local hospital to be evaluated.

A diver with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources was also hurt and received treatment at the scene.

All divers were expected to be OK.

“Strong currents, changing wave action, and limited visibility beneath the water can quickly overwhelm even experienced swimmers and rescuers,” the fire department said. “We urge everyone to pay close attention.”

No other information has been made available.
