Powerful Hurricane Polo Soaks Mexico’s Coast as Nolo Nears Hawaii

MEXICO CITY — Residents along Mexico’s Pacific coast piled sandbags around beachfront businesses and fled vulnerable homes Thursday as Hurricane Polo threatened Mexico and Hurricane Nolo intensified toward Hawaii, raising fears of catastrophic flooding on the Big Island and Maui.

Nolo strengthened into a hurricane Thursday night and was forecast to intensify as it approached Hawaii’s Big Island, according to the National Hurricane Center. The island could receive 15 to 30 inches (38 to 76 centimeters) of rain, with even higher totals possible through Saturday. Forecasters also warned of potentially deadly flooding on Maui.
