Federal prosecutors, in a trial memorandum, allege that 30-year-old Jonathan Rinderknecht was emotionally troubled due to a failed relationship with a former colleague and was upset about having no plans for New Year’s Eve.

Passengers who rode in Rinderknecht’s Uber that evening reported his erratic driving and described him as furious, expressing anger towards the world.

The memorandum further reveals that Rinderknecht was preoccupied with Luigi Mangione, the suspect in the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, and had a fascination with fire.

Rinderknecht’s trial is slated to commence on June 8. Prosecutors plan to call up to 50 witnesses, and the trial is expected to last approximately 10 days.

In November 2025, a judge decreed that Rinderknecht must remain in custody pending his trial.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Rozella A. Oliver denied bond to Rinderknecht, saying he must be kept in custody due to his mental health and distress he caused his sister and her family.

Rinderknecht’s father testified in support of his release, denying that his son had mental health issues.

If convicted on all charges, Rinderknecht faces up to 45 years in federal prison.
