LA residents quality of life score drops to new low

Life in Los Angeles may not meet everyone’s expectations.

A recent survey has revealed that LA residents are experiencing unprecedented dissatisfaction with life in the city, citing high living costs, education issues, and traffic congestion as major concerns.

Conducted by the UCLA Luskin School of Public Affairs, the survey indicates that the quality of life score for residents in Los Angeles County has plummeted to a historic low of 52, marking the lowest point in the survey’s 11-year history.

Out of nine categories assessed, six have reached record lows, and eight have seen declines since last year.

The survey highlights that education, transportation, and cost of living—already rated poorly—have experienced the most significant drops, emphasizing ongoing challenges related to affordability and infrastructure.

This widespread frustration among Angelenos coincides with the financially pressured LA Unified School District’s decision to approve substantial pay raises for its staff, despite students in the district underperforming compared to state averages and the district’s leadership facing investigations by federal and local authorities.

Zev Yaroslavsky, director of the Los Angeles Initiative at UCLA Luskin, also pointed to rising living costs, immigration enforcement activity, and the fallout from the Altadena and Palisades fires as key forces weighing on residents’ day-to-day lives.

“Los Angeles County residents’ rating of their quality of life has been in decline since the peak of the COVID pandemic,” he said.

More than 26% of residents reported losing income due to the wildfires, and about 1 in 5 are still dealing with unrecovered losses. Frustration is widespread, with 56% dissatisfied with how local government handled recovery efforts.

The survey polled 1,400 LA County residents between March 15 and March 29, 2026, with a 2.6% margin of error.
