UCSD Jewish fraternity house vandalized with racial slurs

Authorities are investigating an antisemitic vandalism incident at a UC San Diego Jewish fraternity house after swastikas and the letters “KKK” were spray-painted on the property, police said.

The graffiti was found on both the inside and outside walls of a residence used by members of Alpha Epsilon Pi in the University City area, with the damage believed to have occurred sometime between Aug. 7 and Aug. 8, according to the San Diego Police Department.

Investigators said the property was also defaced with racial slurs in multiple areas.

San Diego police are treating the case as a hate crime and are working to identify the people responsible.

“We are still actively investigating this vandalism. At this time, we have not made an arrest,” the SDPD told the California Post.

Police said they are withholding further details for now, adding, “As is the motive for all hate crimes, the intent is to cause fear amongst the victim group.”

UC San Diego also denounced the vandalism, with Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla describing the incident as “abhorrent and unacceptable.”

“We condemn this vile act, and will not accept hate or antisemitism toward anyone in our community,” Khosla said in a message sent to the UC San Diego community.

The university said the incident had been reported to appropriate campus offices and that it was supporting the affected students.

“Anyone whose conduct violates the law or university policy” will be held accountable “to the maximum extent of our abilities,” Khosla said.

Police are asking anyone who saw suspicious people or vehicles near the residence during the two-day period to come forward.

San Diego County Crime Stoppers, a nonprofit organization that helps law enforcement solve felony crimes, is offering a reward of up to $2,000 for information leading to an arrest.
