Sea lions once on the brink of death get adorable beach release

In a heartwarming scene along the Southern California coast, a group of sea lion pups made a triumphant return to the ocean after being rescued and nursed back to health. Found in dire condition last month, these young marine mammals were malnourished and on the verge of death when dedicated animal caretakers intervened.

The picturesque event took place on Friday at Manhattan Beach, where a crowd, including Mayor Joe Franklin, gathered to witness the uplifting moment. The celebration marked the release of three sea lion pups affectionately named Tortellini, Rotini, and Cavatappi.

Captivating images and videos captured the touching moment as the sea lion pups were set free from their crates. The young animals eagerly made their way across the sandy shore and into the ocean, cheered on by both their rescuers and a supportive community.

In one particularly poignant video, the pups could be seen frolicking in the waves, showcasing their renewed strength and vitality—a stark contrast to their weak and emaciated state when they were first discovered in April.

Tortellini, a female pup, was rescued on April 12 from Dockweiler State Beach. At the time, she was in a critical state, with her emaciated frame revealing her backbone beneath her fur. An Instagram post documenting her rescue highlighted her dire condition.

“During Tortellini’s initial examination, our veterinary team observed swelling in her jaw and noted discharge from her eye,” detailed a press release from the rescue team.

Her eye infection was treated with anti-inflammatory medication and a vision supplement, and her squinting improved, per the release.

Rescuers also dealt with her health, making up a mixture of mashed-up fish that she was fed through a tube. Officials said soon she was strong enough to eat a whole fish.

“After six weeks in care, Tortellini’s eye issues have fully resolved, and she has nearly doubled in weight. She is now ready to return to her ocean home,” the release added.

Another female sea lion, Rotini, was rescued in April after being spotted at the same state beach by a cleanup crew.

Officials said she was both malnourished and dehydrated. To get her strong and in tip top swimming shape, she was also tube-fed a fish mixture, but soon was eating a whole fish.

Now, she’s back to a healthy weight and ready to return to the wild.

And lastly, the male pup of the group, Cavatappi, He was rescued last month at El Segundo after being found dehydrated and malnourished.

In a short time tube-feeding healed him and he doubled in size, ready for release back to his ocean home, per the announcement.

The three were taken in by the Marine Mammal Care Center (MMCC) the only year-round marine mammal rehabilitation center in Los Angeles.

The group says they rescue “more marine mammals per mile of coastline than any other organization in the US.”
