Rob Reiner’s Son Explains Why He Threw Out the First Pitch at Dodgers Game

Jake Reiner has opened up about the deeply personal meaning behind the ceremonial first pitch he and his sister, Romy, threw at a recent Los Angeles Dodgers game in honor of their late parents.

“The Dodgers have always been a huge part of our family,” Jake wrote on X, reflecting on the bond baseball helped create with his father. “My dad and I could talk baseball for hours and I truly never felt closer to him than when we’d watch games together.”

He added that Dodger Stadium held special memories for the family. “Dodger Stadium is a place we’d love to come to as a family,” Jake continued. “Romy and I wanted to honor our mom and dad by throwing out a ceremonial first pitch for each of them. We’re grateful the Dodgers helped make this moment so special.”

Before Sunday’s Dodgers-Red Sox matchup at Dodger Stadium, Jake and Romy walked onto the field wearing Dodgers jerseys with “Reiner” printed across the back. Jake delivered a strike to the plate, while Romy’s throw drifted just wide.

After the emotional tribute, the siblings posed for photos with Dodgers outfielder Alex Call and infielder Miguel Rojas, who were on the receiving end of their pitches.

The moment came several months after Rob Reiner, 78, and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, 70, were found stabbed to death inside their Brentwood home in December.

According to their death certificates, the couple died within “minutes” of suffering “multiple sharp force injuries” that were inflicted “with a knife, by another.”

Their youngest son, 32-year-old Nick Reiner, was later arrested and charged with two counts of first-degree murder.

He pleaded not guilty at a February court hearing and remains behind bars at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility in Los Angeles. Nick was diagnosed with schizophrenia before the killings and has a long history of drug addiction.

Jake has previously spoken about the bond he shared with his father through baseball.

“When it comes to the Dodgers, my first love, it’s something that I’ve always connected with my dad first and foremost, and it’s something that I will continue to connect with him for the rest of my life,” he said on an episode of “The Incline: Dodgers Podcast.”

He also reflected on their shared love of the team in a Substack essay after his parents’ deaths.

“My connection with him was first built on baseball. It was my grandfather’s favorite sport, passed down to my dad and then to me. We loved the Dodgers more than anything,” Jake wrote.

“We went to so many damn games. I’ll never go to Dodger Stadium again without feeling my dad’s presence and hearing his voice tell me why Shohei Ohtani should never bat in the leadoff spot.”

Romy, who discovered her parents dead in their childhood home, has largely remained out of the public spotlight and has not publicly spoken about the killings.
