Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed his views on Thursday, describing the assassination of Charlie Kirk as indicative of a “deep divide” within American society. He also extended his sympathies to the family of the deceased conservative activist.
Speaking at the Valdai Discussion Club in Sochi, at a forum of Russian experts, Putin addressed the killing, according to Reuters.
“This is a horrifying act, particularly since it was live-streamed for all to witness. It was truly terrible,” Putin stated. “My thoughts are with Mr. Kirk’s family and his loved ones during this difficult time. We share in their sorrow and grief.”
The tragic death of Charlie Kirk has sparked an intense debate regarding political violence in the United States. Republican leaders have called on Democrats to tone down their rhetoric concerning President Donald Trump and to promote greater acceptance of differing opinions.
In addition to addressing Kirk’s death, Putin also responded to Trump’s recent characterization of Russia as a “paper tiger.”
“A paper tiger? Then confront this so-called paper tiger,” Putin remarked. “If we are effectively engaging with the entire NATO alliance, making progress, and feeling self-assured—yet still labeled as a paper tiger—what does that suggest about NATO itself?”
Last week, Trump predicted Ukraine could reclaim all its territory from Russia before labeling Moscow a “paper tiger.”
