A San Jose police officer was shot Tuesday afternoon, prompting a large-scale emergency response and sending the injured officer to a local hospital.
San Jose police said the shooting was reported at 12:31 p.m. near Lick Avenue and Goodyear Street.
The wounded officer was transported to Valley Medical Center for treatment.
A significant police presence was also seen near Almaden Avenue and Floyd Street, where San Jose officers and Santa Clara County sheriff’s deputies were observed with weapons drawn.
University police may have also assisted in the response, according to reports from the scene.
Witnesses told NBC they saw a person on the ground and expressed concern that a suspect may have barricaded themselves somewhere nearby.
Police had not verified those witness accounts.
As of 8 p.m. Tuesday, authorities had not provided an update on the officer’s condition or confirmed whether any suspect had been injured or taken into custody.
San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan, a Democrat, planned to visit the wounded officer at the hospital, his office said.
The shooting remained under investigation Tuesday night, with police saying more information would be released when available.
