Monday marks the beginning of fall, and for those eager to bid farewell to summer, there’s a shared sense of joy. Many relish this season, but what’s the allure?

From the vibrant foliage to the comforting feel of warm apparel and the inviting aromas of cinnamon and spices, fall captivates our senses.

These elements of autumn stimulate the brain’s reward system, releasing dopamine, which fosters feelings of coziness, tranquility, and nostalgia. Dr. Susan Albers, a psychologist from the Cleveland Clinic, highlights the advantages of fall’s refreshing air, offering a welcome contrast to summer’s heat.

“With cooler weather, it’s simpler to head outdoors for activities like hiking and exercise, which can be challenging in the summer heat,” Albers stated. “Engaging in outdoor activities increases brain oxygen levels, enhancing mental clarity and calmness. Just a few minutes outside in the brisk air can greatly benefit both body and mind.”

The “scarcity effect” of all things pumpkin-spiced, typically only available during fall, can add to the magic as well.

For families with school-aged children, the return to a more stable routine is an additional perk. Albers emphasized the potential benefits of consistent mealtimes and bedtimes, which are often more achievable with the school schedule.

According to Albers, you might also find yourself sleeping better this season. Shorter daylight hours and earlier sunsets can facilitate getting the recommended seven to nine hours of sleep each night.
