SDCC 2026 Volunteers Turn Wheelchairs Into Superhero Rides

SAN DIEGO, Calif. — At San Diego Comic-Con, creativity is rolling through the convention floor in a powerful way, as a nonprofit helps young fans turn their wheelchairs into eye-catching cosplay builds inspired by beloved characters and pop culture worlds.

Among the standout designs was a wheelchair transformed into “Battle Cat” from “He-Man,” while another attendee proudly debuted a custom creation that he said was even more impressive than he had imagined.

Derek Thatcher said the finished design left him amazed, noting that he never expected it to turn out with such remarkable detail, craftsmanship and visual impact.

Behind the memorable wheelchair cosplay moments is Magic Wheelchair, a nonprofit organization dedicated to celebrating inclusion, imagination and personal expression through custom mobility device designs.

Christine Getman, Magic Wheelchair’s executive director, said the mission goes beyond honoring comics and fandom culture. She said the organization also highlights the independence wheelchairs provide and helps reshape how people understand disability.

For Magic Wheelchair, the real heroes are the volunteers who bring each elaborate design to life.

Jeff Watamura said the builders come from many backgrounds, from hobbyists working out of garages to skilled professionals. As a teacher, he said he also helps create the projects with students at school.

Supporters said the custom wheelchair costumes are designed to do more than turn heads at Comic-Con; they are meant to inspire confidence, connection and a sense of belonging.

“It’s a big deal,” Scottie Foertmeyer said. “It goes beyond getting a costume. Like, that’s cool and it looks great and it’s fun. But the mission’s actually empowering kids.”

The program is provided at no cost to families, including transportation to the event, lodging at the convention, badges and the finished wheelchair design.

“And the beauty of this whole thing, one of my favorite parts, is it’s entirely done at no cost to the families,” Shawn Thorsson said. “So everything they get, they get transportation to the event, lodging at the convention, the badges, all of that and then this goes home. It belongs to them free and clear.”

The latest cosplay wheelchair was unveiled Friday afternoon and now belongs to a 16-year-old from Long Beach.

“I have no words for how awesome this chair is,” Isaiah Mejia said.

Magic Wheelchair is based in Oregon, but its goal is to help people all around the country.
