EVANSTON, Ill. (WLS) — Rescuers recovered the body of a missing swimmer from Lake Michigan at Evanston’s Lighthouse Beach after a thorough search on Saturday night, according to fire officials.

Authorities were initially called to 2611 Sheridan Road at approximately 7 p.m. following a report that three men in their 20s were having difficulty in the water.

Bystanders rescued two swimmers from the water, fire officials said. The two rescued men were evaluated and released on the scene.

Emergency crews from the Evanston Fire Department, Chicago Fire Department, and the Coast Guard conducted a search for a third swimmer, eventually locating his body at around 9:40 p.m. He was declared deceased at the scene.

The man’s identity was not immediately released.

Evanston’s fire chief says lake conditions made the search difficult.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the victim’s family and friends,” stated Evanston Fire Chief Paul Polep. “This incident serves as a stern reminder of the dangers of these waters, and we urge everyone to heed the no swimming signs. We appreciate the prompt assistance from our regional partners, including MABAS Division 3, the Coast Guard, and the Chicago Fire Department.”

Officials are investigating and did not immediately provide further information.
