One of San Diego’s most prestigious coastal areas is grappling with turmoil as teenagers engage in impromptu “fight clubs,” a situation that law enforcement attributes largely to social media’s influence.
Recently, La Jolla, a picturesque seaside enclave known for its luxurious properties and beautiful coastline, has witnessed a surge in disturbances reminiscent of fight clubs at Marine Street Beach, a favored spot for local surfers.
Sergeant Ricky Escalante of the San Diego Police Department explained to Fox 5 San Diego, “These gatherings are intentional. We’ve observed an influx of large groups descending on our beaches, not only from San Diego but from neighboring counties as well.”
Teenagers are coordinating these meetups via social media platforms, and what might start as a casual gathering can quickly devolve into large-scale altercations.
Videos uploaded by an Instagram user depict both girls and boys engaging in fights, some donning boxing gloves while others rely on bare fists.
Initially intended as simple beach hangouts, these gatherings can rapidly escalate as more teens join, transforming the once peaceful area into a hotspot for unruly behavior.
âA lot of the times, the fights start up as more organized boxing matches, and then from that they do escalate to actual full-on fist fights,â Escalante told Fox 5.
Residents say the scene feels out of place in a neighborhood better known for quiet, upscale living than brutal beatdowns.
Police say they are working to stop future gatherings by increasing patrols and monitoring activity as the trend continues to grow.
