LaGuardia Airport Closes Runway After Sinkhole Discovery

New York City’s LaGuardia Airport faced an unexpected disruption on Wednesday when officials discovered a sinkhole on one of its runways, prompting an immediate closure. This development, announced by Port Authority representatives, has thrown a wrench in the airport’s operations.

In a post on X, the airport warned that “travelers should expect delays and cancellations.” LaGuardia Airport also shared that “emergency construction and engineering crews” were trying to figure out “the cause and complete necessary repairs.”

The sinkhole was identified during a routine morning inspection around 11 a.m. near Runway 4/22. In response, the runway was promptly shut down. Emergency construction and engineering teams were dispatched to assess the situation, aiming to uncover the cause and carry out repairs swiftly and safely, as stated by the airport.

Efforts are underway to manage the situation, with the Port Authority maintaining close communication with airlines and other airport partners. They have pledged to keep the public informed as the situation evolves. Travelers should brace for potential delays and cancellations, especially with thunderstorms forecasted for later in the day. It is strongly advised for passengers to directly contact their airlines for the latest updates on flight statuses.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has reported a significant impact on departures, with delays averaging 105 minutes according to their website.

Southwest Airlines has indicated that approximately 20 arrivals will face delays on Wednesday. Meanwhile, Delta Air Lines has implemented a weather waiver for flights entering and leaving New York City, as reported by CNBC. This underscores the extent of the disruption caused by the unforeseen runway closure.

A spokesman with Southwest Airlines shared that roughly 20 “arrivals will be delayed Wednesday,” while Delta Air Lines shared that “it has a weather waiver in place for flights in and out” of the city, CNBC reported.
