South Carolina fitness trainer’s autopsy raises more questions about mysterious death

A South Carolina fitness trainer who was missing for nearly a week had posted a series of puzzling social media comments just weeks before authorities found her body.

Elena Katherine Moore, 39, was discovered dead almost one week after she disappeared on June 11, following a visit to a Planet Fitness location in Lexington, South Carolina. In a statement released Monday, the Lexington County Coroner’s Office said a forensic autopsy found no signs of bruising, cuts, gunshot or stab wounds, blunt force trauma, strangulation, or other visible external injuries.

Officials have not yet determined her cause of death. Investigators are awaiting additional test results and a review of Moore’s medical records before making that determination.

A review of one of Moore’s Instagram accounts showed that she had left several comments roughly three weeks before her body was found.

One comment appeared beneath a post captioned “the war is over,” in which another Instagram user described finding peace after a difficult relationship.

“i am finally free and safe!” Moore wrote in response.

The fitness trainer also commented on a post that talked about the anger and resentment left behind after a painful relationship, with Moore commenting: “the memories are in the trash- and i stopped loving him a LONG time ago- i just was looking for a way out when i realized i was in a relationship with the devil.”

A spokeswoman for the Lexington Police Department confirmed to News Agency that Moore was also reported missing on June 5, but no action was taken because she was located. Friends of Moore told News Agency she checked herself into a psychiatric facility during that timeframe.

Moore was found dead near Old Cherokee Road and Northlake Drive in Lexington County on June 17. Lexington Police Chief Terrence Green said that her body was located after a tip led them to a new search area.

Sondra Campbell, who was close friends with Moore, told News Agency that something felt “very different” the last time she saw her on May 31.

“She was scared for her life. She actually said those words to me,” Campbell said. “Elena is one of my best friends. I’ve known her over probably 10 years now. We’re really close like tell each other everything. She’s been that person for me for a long time.”

Authorities have not said whether they suspect foul play, and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is handling the investigation into Moore’s death.
