SpaceX to buy AI coding assistant Cursor for $60 billion

Days after a blockbuster initial public offering, SpaceX announced Tuesday that it has agreed to acquire AI coding assistant Cursor in an all-stock deal valued at $60 billion, according to a securities filing.

The company, led by Elon Musk and known for its space launch and satellite businesses, said Cursor will operate as a wholly owned subsidiary once the transaction is completed in the third quarter of 2026. Cursor was created by San Francisco-based startup Anysphere.

Introduced in 2022, Cursor became one of the early drivers of the so-called “vibe coding” movement, a term tied to the growing use of AI tools that can independently generate software code.

On its website, Cursor describes itself as a “coding agent for building ambitious software.”

Neither SpaceX nor Cursor immediately responded to requests for comment.

The acquisition news follows SpaceX’s $75 billion IPO last Friday. In pre-market trading Tuesday, SpaceX shares climbed 5% to $202.11.
