St. Louis Cardinals Rookie Makes MLB History in Debut

Baseball had never seen anything like it before — and there’s a real chance it won’t see it again anytime soon.

St. Louis Cardinals rookie Joshua Báez made MLB history Saturday by becoming the first player ever to launch three home runs in his major league debut. Even more stunning: he did it in his first three at-bats.

That’s not just impressive. That’s the kind of debut that instantly becomes baseball folklore.

Most rookies step onto a big league field hoping to stay composed, avoid a costly mistake and maybe contribute one memorable moment. Báez, however, delivered three of them before the night was even fully settled in. The odds are almost impossible to wrap your head around — and considering it had never happened across roughly 150 years of Major League Baseball history, it feels safe to say this was truly extraordinary.

I could ask artificial intelligence to calculate the probability, but I’m not trying to overheat a server farm today. Kidding, of course — mostly.

The 23-year-old wasted absolutely no time announcing himself. In his first MLB plate appearance, Báez jumped on the very first pitch he saw — a 93-mph fastball from Chicago Cubs starter Matt Boyd — and sent it soaring 450 feet to straightaway center field at Wrigley Field for a two-run home run.

If there is such a thing as a perfect introduction to the majors, this was it:

You already know the outcome of the story, but we still need to visit the plot points along the way. Already a crowd favorite in his debut performance, Baez came back to the plate in the fourth inning and promptly took a full-count Boyd 78-mph changeup and smacked it 382 feet into the left-field seats.

The Cardinals’ X account was getting a little excited:

But wait, there’s more! And why leave right field out of it, since we’ve already talked about center and left? I feel a bit sorry for the pitcher, Boyd, though, because he’s going down in history too after Baez smoked his slider 368 feet to right.

Now the Cards X account was really getting worked up:

Whew. What a performance, one for the ages.
