Located just a short 20-minute drive from San Francisco’s iconic Golden Gate Bridge, the Pelican Inn in Muir Beach, California, offers visitors a charming journey back in time.

“As soon as you step inside, you’ll be greeted by the comforting aroma of a wood-burning fireplace, and your eyes will take in the sight of antique furnishings,” describes Chelsea Swinea, the hotel’s manager. “Our aim is to transport guests to the ambiance of 16th-century England.”

Established in 1978 by Charles Felix, an English expatriate, The Pelican Inn opened its doors to offer a nostalgic slice of his homeland.

“He wanted a touch of his own roots here,” Swinea notes.

Guests staying overnight can choose from seven charmingly unique rooms.

“Each room has its own distinct character,” Swinea explains. “They’re all decorated with genuine, exquisite paintings and antiques, adding to the inn’s historic allure.”

A passersby can visit the inn and enjoy some time at the cozy pub complete with UK beverages, darts and an authentic laid-back atmosphere.

“It was very thoughtfully put in place down to every detail. Visitors come from all over. They put their currency up on the ceiling,” Swinea says, “One of the really cool details is the bar backsplash is from an old ship, and it’s hundreds of years old. “

If you have a bit of an appetite, enjoy a delicious dinner at the inn’s inviting restaurant.

“You’re encountering all of those tapered candles, real candles,” Swinea states, “The menu is very British so if you’re looking for fish and chips, Shepherd’s Pie, you came to the right place.”

And to end the evening, overnight guests can enjoy some rest and relaxation in the inn’s snug, an intimate room off the pub.

“We have a fireplace, sofas, games,” Swinea notes, “it’s just a spot where you can relax.”

Whether you stop by for a drink, a bite or an overnight, the Pelican Inn offers an unforgettable experience.

“It’s just a one in a lifetime experience,” Swinea say with a smile.
