Middleburg shooting leaves two parents dead, shot by teen

Clay County Sheriff’s deputies said the shooting happened in the area of Silver Point and County Road 220 in Middleburg.

MIDDLEBURG, Fla. — A tragic incident unfolded early Monday morning in Middleburg, where Clay County Sheriff Michelle Cook reported that a 14-year-old boy fatally shot his parents.

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office shared an update on Facebook around 6 a.m. stating that deputies were on the scene near Silver Point and County Road 220 in Middleburg.

Sheriff Cook mentioned that the initial call came shortly after midnight on Monday. The teenager, named Trevor Lee, contacted authorities, confessing to killing his parents and indicating he would surrender at a church, where deputies arrested him.

Upon reaching the residence, deputies discovered the bodies of 44-year-old David Lee and 45-year-old Brandi Smith, both suffering from fatal gunshot injuries, according to Cook.

Cook explained that the preliminary investigation suggests the shooting resulted from a confrontation between the teen and his parents on Sunday night, and there is no additional threat to the public. Lee seemingly used his parents’ firearm and left it at the location.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and everyone impacted by this tragic event,” Cook stated. “We encourage anyone in the community with information regarding Trevor Lee or his parents to contact us at (904) 264-6512.”

Cook said investigators are currently looking into Trevor Lee’s history of mental health and school. He’s now charged with two counts of second-degree murder.

The investigation is still ongoing, and Cook said there’s no further threat to the community.
