A 12-year-old boy was fatally shot Sunday night after a suspect opened fire during what police described as a “brawl” in Nashville’s theater district.
Authorities identified the victim as Damarion Morehead, who was struck in the head after a fight involving about “six to seven” people erupted near the intersection of Representative John Lewis Way and Deaderick Street, beside the Tennessee Performing Arts Center.
Morehead was taken to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
The Metro Nashville Police Department said officers arrested 24-year-old Devin Orr, who is accused of being the shooter.
Detectives reviewed video footage from the scene as part of their investigation.
“During the brawl, Orr reached into his waistband to retrieve a handgun. At this point, persons involved in the fight began to run away. Shots were fired and Morehead fell to the ground,” the Metro Nashville Police Department said in a statement.
Police said the fight began over a female.
During questioning, Orr allegedly told detectives he placed a handgun in a sewer; investigators later recovered the weapon.
Davidson County court records say Orr is due in court on Wednesday; an attorney for the suspect has not yet been listed.
