Pvt. Gabriel J. Perez of Anchorage, Alaska, has been identified as the soldier who died during training at Fort Jackson on April 24.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — The Army has identified a soldier who was found dead on April 24 during training at Fort Jackson.

On Friday, a spokesperson for the Army post shared that the deceased soldier was Pvt. Gabriel J. Perez from Anchorage, Alaska. He was in basic combat training with Charlie Company, 2nd Battalion, 13th Infantry Regiment. While the Army did not disclose further details on the circumstances of the soldier’s death, they confirmed that an investigation is in progress.

Perez’s family has been informed about his passing. Maj. Gen. Daryl O. Hood, the commander of Fort Jackson, stated that support was being offered to Perez’s family and fellow soldiers.

“We encourage anyone who is struggling to reach out for help,” Hood said.

Perez’s unit conducted a 48-hour stand-down after his death.
