'They took everything from me': Son of Jacksonville woman killed on Grothe St. vows to get justice for his mother

Cassandra Brown was shot and killed outside of a home on Grothe St. on June 13th.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Nearly two weeks after a tragic shooting claimed the life of his mother, a Jacksonville resident is seeking justice and urging community support.

Calvin Brown, the son of Cassandra Brown, fondly remembers his mother as a cherished figure within the community who was always willing to help those around her.

“I hope you won’t just think of her as ‘shorty,'” Calvin expressed, “but recognize her as Cassandra Elizabeth Brown, a woman who was deeply loved by her family and the community at large.”

Cassandra Brown, who had been battling breast cancer, was killed on Grothe St. on June 13, 2025. She was shot in the head. The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office is still looking for the person responsible, but Calvin said he knows who pulled the trigger.

“I know. The whole community knows, the whole community. So out of respect for the local law enforcement, I’m going to allow them to do their due diligence and their job,” Calvin explained.

Calvin said his mom had been receiving threats because she was a witness in a trial last year where a woman was convicted of shooting a man and sentenced to life in prison. First Coast News obtained an incident report detailing a call Cassandra made to JSO about a month before her death after the front of her home was vandalized.

“She never thought anybody would hurt her. No matter what the circumstances were from the threats, but she never thought anybody would have that opportunity to actually hurt her,” Calvin said.

Calvin is now on a mission to prevent this from happening to another family. He wants policies to change to provide better protections for witnesses.

He is also calling on people in the community to speak up and help his family find justice for his mother.

“Those individuals that say that my mom was their friend and she was a good woman, this ain’t about a reward. It’s about peace in the community. And until we begin to stand up for our own communities and bring those responsible to justice, there’ll be no peace,” Calvin said.

If you have any information about the Cassandra Brown’s death, you are urged to JSO at 904-630-0500 or First Coast Crime Stoppers at 1-866-845-TIPS. You can remain anonymous.
