NEW YORK CITY — Three unidentified people were spotted emerging from a sewer on Manhattan’s Upper East Side before leaving in two vehicles early Wednesday, according to the NYPD.
Police said officers were dispatched at about 4:35 a.m. after receiving a 911 call reporting a possible crime near 535 Park Ave. and East 61st Street. By the time officers arrived, the three people had exited the sewer and fled north on Park Avenue.
The unusual activity was recorded by an NYPD surveillance camera, authorities said.
Investigators described one getaway vehicle as a silver sedan driven by a white man wearing a black hoodie. The second vehicle was a four-door car driven by a man dressed in a black shirt and gray shorts.
No arrests have been reported, and the investigation remains active, police said.
The sewer incident occurred as police stepped up security around the United Nations General Assembly, which has drawn world leaders and international delegations to New York City this week.
It is the latest in a series of reports in recent months involving people entering or emerging from sewers and manholes across the New York area. Similar incidents have been reported near Penn Station, as well as in Queens, Brooklyn and Long Island. In some cases, police said those involved claimed they were searching underground for valuables.
New York City’s Department of Environmental Protection has previously warned that entering the sewer system without authorization is both illegal and dangerous.
