An eight-year-old boy experienced a severe mishap while snorkeling near the Florida shore on Labor Day, but his life was saved, thanks to the courageous efforts of his older sister.

Richard Burrows was swimming in the waters of Key Largo close to John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park when a blacktip reef shark attacked him, as reported by the Miami Herald.

He was immediately taken to a nearby hospital following a major injury to his knee. His family released a statement saying: ‘The injury Richard sustained was significant, but with the assistance of various individuals, it was managed.’

In the family’s statement, they highlight the crucial role Richard’s 10-year-old sister, Rose, played in his rescue, expressing immense pride in her ability to stay composed and strong under pressure.

Rose and Richard were snorkeling with their father, David, 48, when the horrifying attack occurred.

The statement also mentioned that Richard’s father quickly tied a tourniquet on his son’s leg, and a local dive captain named Richard Hayden, 33, provided additional help.

A 911 call obtained by the Herald reported that Rose was helping her father hold her brother’s leg up to stop the bleeding.

Hayden applied a second tourniquet to the child and helped guide the family to shore.

A 911 call acquired by local NBC affiliate, WTVJ, disclosed a man on the boat asking: ‘We have a severe shark bite injury on board, where is the closest point to land?’

When asked by the dispatcher how bad the bite was, the man responded: ‘It’s bad, just at the knee…I gotta stop the bleeding’.

The man then informed emergency authorities that the dive boat was heading to the Garden Cove Marina and that the boy was still breathing.

‘We’re coming in hot to the marina, we’re probably five minutes out,’ the man said.

Emergency responders met the family at the marina and airlifted Richard to Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami.

Hayden reportedly told the Monroe Sheriff’s Office that it looked like the family had been spearfishing, which requires a handheld sharp-pointed tool, the Herald reported.

According to the Florida Museum, the blood of a seared fish may attract sharks. Spearfishing is illegal in Monroe County, which includes the boundaries of John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park.

The family’s statement, however, noted that they were snorkeling when the shark rushed at Richard.

Doctors operated on Richard on Monday night and saved his leg, Sheriff Rick Ramsay confirmed to the Herald.

‘Richard is recovering well from his surgery and is gaining strength by the day. He is in good spirits. Our hope is that he will be back enjoying his passion for the ocean and marine life with his older sister in no time,’ the family said.

Daily Mail reached out to Monroe County authorities for additional information on the shark attack.

Black tip reef sharks have recognizable black fins and white highlights. They are commonly found on coral reefs and have been known to bite humans.

Last week, a Texas girl named Harper Ochoa, 8, was swimming in shallow waters off the coast of Galveston when a shark bit her leg, ripping off a chunk of flesh.

Her mother told local CBS affiliate, KWTX, that Harper required 13 staples in her leg after the attack.
