Tragedy struck on Long Island as a toddler was fatally hit by a pickup truck in a driveway, according to police reports released on Saturday.
While authorities have not disclosed the child’s age or gender, Greater Long Island, an online news outlet, reported that the victim was a 2-year-old boy.
Police were called to a residence on Maureen Drive in Mount Sinai around 12:30 p.m. Saturday, as stated by the Suffolk County police. Upon arrival, officers discovered the injured child, who was immediately transported to Stony Brook University Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
The child’s parents, a 44-year-old mother and a 43-year-old father, were present at the scene, according to police statements. The toddler was hit by a Ram 1500 pickup truck, which was subsequently towed away from the location.
This incident marks at least the second occurrence this year of a toddler being fatally struck by a vehicle on Long Island.
In a similar tragedy back in August, a 2-year-old boy lost his life in a parking lot accident at Belmont Lake State Park in North Babylon.
The driver, who was behind the wheel of an Acura sedan, called 911 and remained on the scene. Investigators deemed the toddler’s death a tragic accident and criminal charges were not filed.
