6 people found dead inside Texas railroad boxcar

Authorities have uncovered a grim situation in Laredo, Texas, where six bodies were found inside a train boxcar on Sunday.

A Union Pacific employee made the unsettling discovery in a secluded train yard close to the Mexican border, as reported by Laredo Police Investigator Joe Baeza.

Both police and firefighters who responded to the scene verified the fatalities, though the cause of death remains unknown at this time, according to police statements.

“Union Pacific is deeply saddened by this tragic event and is actively cooperating with law enforcement in their investigation,” Daryl Bjoraas, Union Pacific’s spokesperson, mentioned in a statement to The Post.

No survivors were found in the boxcar, and the origins of the deceased individuals have not been disclosed by police.

Describing the location to NBC News, Baeza likened it to “a loading dock at a seaport, but for trains,” highlighting its role in the loading and unloading of numerous rail cars.

Previous instances of deaths in train cars near the US-Mexico border have been related to migrants and human smuggling operations — including the 53 migrants who were found in the back of a sweltering tractor-trailer in Texas in 2022.

In 2023, 12 migrants, including two who were dead, were found inside a locked train car that had been sitting in sweltering temperatures 20 miles east of Uvalde.

Temperatures in Laredo on Sunday reached a scorching high of 97 degrees Fahrenheit, according to the National Weather Service.

An investigation into the incident remains ongoing.
