Chicago police shooting: Man shot, killed by officer investigating stolen vehicle on North Side, CPD says

In a tragic turn of events, a Chicago police officer was compelled to use lethal force during an investigation into a stolen vehicle on the city’s North Side late Tuesday night. This incident, which resulted in the death of a man, unfolded at approximately 10:25 p.m. on North Washtenaw Avenue, as reported by the Chicago Police Department (CPD).

The sequence of events began when officers were examining a parked, unoccupied stolen sedan. Their attention was soon drawn to a dark-colored sedan that arrived at the scene, with two men and a woman inside. The arrival of this vehicle marked the start of a dramatic confrontation.

As the two men exited the dark-colored sedan and attempted to enter the stolen car, police officers moved in to intervene. One of the men managed to flee the scene on foot, while the other returned to the dark-colored sedan, setting the stage for a tense and ultimately fatal encounter.

Despite officers’ commands for the man to exit the vehicle, he reportedly refused, leading to a struggle. In the midst of this struggle, the man allegedly accelerated the car, dragging an officer along with it. The situation escalated further when the officer discharged their weapon, striking the man in the head. The vehicle subsequently collided with an unoccupied parked car.

This incident highlights the dangerous and unpredictable nature of police work, particularly in situations involving stolen vehicles and resistant suspects. The CPD is expected to conduct a thorough investigation to determine the precise circumstances that led to this fatal outcome.

During the struggle, police said the man accelerated the car, dragging the officer. The officer fired their gun and struck the man in the head while the vehicle crashed into an unoccupied parked car, police said.

The wounded man was transported to Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

An officer suffered minor injuries and was transported to a hospital, police said.

A woman was taken into custody and two firearms were recovered at the scene, police said.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability is investigating the shooting.
