Footage from a surveillance camera has documented the tragic moments leading up to the death of a Pennsylvania State University student during an attempted armed robbery.
The Philadelphia Police Department reported that 22-year-old Billy Schmidt was near his residence when the robbery attempt occurred early on Saturday around 1:30 a.m. Responding officers discovered Schmidt with a gunshot wound to his chest. He was swiftly transported to a hospital where he was declared deceased at 1:47 a.m., as confirmed by police authorities.
In the video, Schmidt can be heard demanding, “Give me my phone,” shortly before the sound of a gunshot reverberates.
His father, Bill Schmidt, shared with ABC7 that his son was returning from a bar after watching the NBA Finals with friends. Additional security footage reveals an individual hurling a cellphone, followed by another person, identified as Billy Schmidt, running around a corner in pursuit before being fatally shot in the chest.
