Woman dies after falling from 60-foot cliff along popular Smoky Mountains trail

A tragic incident occurred at Great Smoky Mountains National Park this past weekend, where a 65-year-old woman lost her life after falling from a cliff, park rangers confirmed on Monday.

The cliff, situated in Tennessee, measures approximately 60 feet in height and is a well-known landmark along the Alum Cave Trail, as reported by local news outlet WJHL.

Rangers were called to the scene on Saturday following reports of the fall. Despite their prompt response, park officials stated they could not revive the woman, according to the news source.

Spanning the North Carolina-Tennessee border, Great Smoky Mountains National Park is one of the nation’s most frequented parks, renowned for its remote and rugged landscapes.

Alum Cave Trail stands out as a favorite among visitors, offering a 4.6-mile round trip hike that meanders past Alum Cave Bluffs and through the iconic Arch Rock.

The National Park Service’s website warns that the path becomes very steep and leads to Mount LeConte, one of the highest peaks in the Smokies, which draws millions of visitors each year.

Just a day earlier, on Friday, two park visitors were hospitalized after massive boulders slammed into their vehicle during a sudden rockslide, the Charlotte Observer reported, citing the National Park Service.

The enormous slabs reportedly tumbled past a blind curve along a winding road and heavily damaged the front end of the vehicle.
