As of now, the circumstances surrounding how the fall occurred remain unclear, and investigations are underway to determine the events leading up to the tragedy.
A spokesperson for Carnival confirmed to the news outlet that all the necessary authorities have been contacted regarding the situation.
They further mentioned that, as per protocol, law enforcement officials are expected to board the ship at Catalina Island to carry out a thorough investigation.
“Carnival’s Care Team is supporting the guest’s family, and our thoughts and prayers are with them and their loved one,” the spokesperson concluded.
The woman’s identification was not made available.
The Carnival Firenze sails out of Long Beach and can hold 4,126 guests and 1,425 crew members, according to Carnival’s website. The ship has a length of 1,061 feet.
The cruise ship mishap marks the second incident in as many days in the United States.
A crew member went overboard from a Norwegian Cruise Line ship off the Massachusetts coast Sunday, triggering a large-scale search and rescue response.
Surveillance video captured the unidentified employee falling from the side of the Norwegian Breakaway into frigid waters roughly 12 miles off Cape Cod.
