A celebratory high school graduation in Northern California took a tragic turn on Wednesday evening when gunfire erupted outside the venue, resulting in one fatality and injuries to three others. Authorities are actively pursuing the suspect responsible for the shooting.
The incident occurred shortly after Sem Yeto High School’s commencement ceremony concluded at Schafer Stadium, located at Fairfield High School, officials reported.
A situation involving an active shooter is currently unfolding at the stadium, with investigations still in progress.
School district representatives noted that the outbreak of violence occurred following the conclusion of the graduation events.
Around 8 p.m., Suisun City Mayor Alma Hernandez took to social media to inform the public that three individuals had been shot.
She further confirmed the presence of an active shooter at the stadium and emphasized that the investigation remains underway.
“Kind of traumatized for everyone here who had to witness it. It’s outrageous,” Fairfield Police officer Michelle Belyea said.
“It’s sad. Prayers for everyone affected by it. I’m so sorry you had to go through that.”
The Fairfield-Suisun Unified School District confirmed law enforcement officers responded to the campus following the incident.
“Law enforcement is on campus, and as this is an active investigation we have no additional information to share at this time,” a district spokesperson said in a statement. “Our thoughts are with the individuals affected and as soon as we have more details we will share that with you.”
Footage from a livestream reviewed by KCRA 3 showed the graduation ceremony itself and did not appear to capture any gunfire during the event.
One attendee said the shooting broke out in the parking lot after the ceremony concluded, as families and graduates gathered to take photos.
Another witness, a father whose daughter attended to support a graduating friend, said he heard gunshots and immediately started running.
Later Wednesday night, Hernandez said on social media that an active shooting chase was underway in Fairfield, though she did not provide additional details.
Police have not released further information as the investigation continues.
