Nations League final: Fan dies in fall at Spain-Portugal match

The incident occurred while Portugal and Spain were playing the first period of extra time at the Munich stadium.

MUNICH, Germany — Tragedy struck during the Nations League final between Spain and Portugal on Sunday when a soccer fan fell from a higher level onto a media section below, resulting in their death.

A UEFA representative, requesting anonymity due to the lack of clearance to disclose specifics, confirmed the individual suffered fatal injuries from the fall.

The accident happened as Portugal and Spain were engaged in extra time at the Munich stadium. Emergency medical teams, stewards, and law enforcement quickly secured the scene.

Portugal went on to win the game on penalties.

Spain coach Luis de la Fuente addressed the incident at the start of his post-game news conference.

“Before we begin with the questions, I would like to express my condolences because a fan died in the stands today,” de la Fuente said. “My condolences to the family.”
