CHICAGO — In a tragic incident on Chicago’s South Side Wednesday afternoon, two individuals were shot while inside their vehicle, which subsequently collided with another vehicle, according to reports from the Chicago police.

A woman, aged 26, and a man, aged 27, were driving in the 7900 block of South May Street in the Gresham neighborhood around 1:25 p.m. when gunfire erupted, striking both occupants, authorities confirmed.

Following the shooting, their car crashed into a van, as detailed by the Chicago Police Department.

Critically injured, the woman sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was transported to Little Company of Mary Hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries, officials stated.

The man, who suffered two gunshot wounds, was taken to Christ Hospital and is reported to be in stable condition.

Father Michael Pfleger from St. Sabina Church revealed that a baby was present in the back seat of the victims’ vehicle during the incident. Fortunately, the child was unharmed.

The godfather of the woman who was shot confirmed his goddaughter’s infant girl, who’s less than a year old, was in the back of the sedan.

“You know, there’s a baby in the car. These animals have no value on life. This is nothing to them. They need to clean this city up. They need to. There’s gangs, and there’s shooting and the killing. It’s just unbelievable,” godfather Pastor Kirk Bell said.

The driver of the van declined medical treatment.

Chopper 7 was over the scene about 2:40 p.m.

A white Chevy sedan had crashed into a brown van, and the sedan’s windows appeared to be shattered.

Bullet holes were also visible in the sedan. More than 50 shots were fired, based on evidence markers on the ground.

No one is in custody, and area detectives are investigating.

It’s not clear led up to the shooting.
