A worker from the New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has died, and two others were hurt following an explosion on a raw sewage boat in the Hudson River on Saturday.

Just after 10:30 a.m. the New York City Fire Department (FDNY) received a report of an explosion aboard the city-owned vessel, Hunts Point.

Authorities could be seen investigating the scene after the Hudson River explosion.

When crews arrived, they found a large explosion had occurred in one of the holds on the tank, FDNY Deputy Assistant Chief David Simms said.

“The whole DEP family is in mourning today,” expressed DEP Commissioner Rohit T. Aggarwala. “The employee who passed away had been a dedicated servant to both the Department and the City for 33 years.”

Aggarwala also stated, “He was a respected and knowledgeable member of the Bureau of Wastewater Treatment, and his long service highlights his dedication to the DEP’s mission.”

Plant operations were not affected and there did not appear to be any environmental damage, NYC Water posted on X.
