Tennessee woman killed during flash flooding in Cocke County

A devastating incident occurred in Tennessee as relentless rainfall and flooding claimed the life of a woman on Thursday.

Authorities report that a 64-year-old woman lost her life outside her residence after being caught and carried away by rapid floodwaters.

The Cocke County Sheriff’s Office revealed that the woman was near her home, standing close to a vehicle, when the powerful surge of water overwhelmed her.

“Swift water rescue teams, along with other first responders, managed to retrieve the woman from the water, but she was unfortunately pronounced dead,” stated Sheriff C.J. Ball of the Cocke County Sheriff’s Office.

The forecast predicts continued rain and thunderstorms throughout the county until Friday night, prolonging the adverse weather conditions.

Early Thursday, Flash Flood Warnings were announced for Cocke and Greene counties in East Tennessee.

The Tennessee Department of Transportation shut down part of State Route 160 and posted an image of powerful floodwaters spilling over the road.

The weather pattern that triggered water rescues in Texas earlier this week has shifted eastward, with a flash flood threat covering more than 50 million people across a broad swath of the Southeast, through Friday morning.
