Two killed in shooting at South Carolina State University residential complex

A tragic shooting at a residential complex late Thursday night resulted in two fatalities and left at least one individual injured. The lockdown that followed was lifted early Friday morning.

ORANGEBURG, S.C. — The incident unfolded at South Carolina State University, situated in Orangeburg, leading to the deaths of two people and injuring another.

Following the shooting, the university implemented a lockdown around 9:15 p.m. Eastern Time. This precautionary measure remained in place for approximately eight hours, after which it was lifted. Consequently, classes scheduled for Friday were canceled.

Authorities have yet to release the names of the deceased, and details regarding the injured person’s condition remain undisclosed, as stated in a news release from the university late Thursday evening.

As of 11:50 p.m. on Thursday, no information regarding a potential suspect had been provided by officials.

Kaya Mack, who had just completed a food delivery on campus, recounted hearing gunshots and witnessing a significant police presence rushing through a campus gate.

She said she wasn’t sure where the shots were coming from.

“Their loud sirens kind of shook me,” she told local TV station WLTX. “We were looking around, me and other people on campus, we’re all looking around like ‘What’s going on?’”

Investigators were on site and law enforcement was patrolling the campus and areas nearby. The university said it asked the State Law Enforcement Division to investigate the shooting.
