BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — The Birmingham Police Department arrested a suspect in connection to a shooting that killed a 23-year-old Birmingham woman.

According to the BPD, at around 6:18 a.m. April 6, officers responded to a report of a person shot in the 2800 block of Riverview Road. Officers found Amaiyah Sumlin suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Sumlin was transported to UAB Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The suspect left the scene of the shooting but then voluntarily surrendered at BPD Headquarters. The suspect was identified as Ivry Jelks, 22.

Jelks was placed on a 48-hour felony extension at the Birmingham City Jail. An attempted murder warrant was issued against Jelks on Monday. The BPD stated Sumlin died from her injuries Saturday.

Jelks is in custody at the Shelby County Jail. The BPD stated an upgraded charge is forthcoming in the investigation.
