Traveler busted smuggling live grenade in peanut butter jar: TSA

That put him in a seriously sticky situation.

Authorities said Friday that a traveler was caught at an Indiana airport with a live grenade concealed inside a full jar of peanut butter.

The bizarre attempt unraveled last month at Indianapolis International Airport, where the man allegedly tried to pack two live smoke grenades in his checked luggage — one of them buried in the creamy spread, according to the TSA.

The discovery was made after security officers pulled the bag aside for extra screening and uncovered the explosive device, TSA specialist Michael Dunphy said.

“After all contents were removed from the bag, I thought, ‘Weren’t there two grenades in this bag?,’” Dunphy said in a press release last week. “After additional inspection of all the contents in the bag, it became obvious the second grenade was in the peanut butter jar, so I was surprised.”

The unidentified passenger later told airline ticketing staff that a friend had advised him he could get grenades through security by hiding them in a peanut butter jar, the agency said.

Airport police and an airline station manager were brought in, though officials did not immediately say whether the traveler was arrested or faced any penalties.

“This was my most memorable call over the last few years,” Dunphy said.

The bizarre bust comes as food-related absurdities have reportedly increased at airports in recent weeks — including ones centered on salad dressing.

Foreign soccer fans visiting the US for the World Cup have been bringing full bottles of ranch dressing onto planes, prompting the TSA to warn travelers last week to pack the dressing in checked luggage.

Trying to hide a banned item “will only result in more severe consequences,” the agency warned in the press release

The TSA didn’t immediately return a call from The Post on Friday.
