President Donald Trump expressed approval for New York City Mayor Eric Adams’ re-election efforts on Tuesday, simultaneously warning Democratic socialist and leading mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani of possible arrest should he interfere with ICE operations.
During a speech at the “Alligator Alcatraz” migrant detention facility in Florida, Trump described Adams, who is increasingly aligning with MAGA ideals, as a “very good person.”
“I gave him a little help,” Trump remarked, referencing the Department of Justice’s contentious decision to drop Adams’ federal corruption charges. “He faced an issue and was treated unfairly regarding this matter.”
“That was a Biden indictment. I said, ‘Don’t feel bad. I got indicted five times.’”
Adams faced corruption and bribery charges in what both the mayor and Trump have argued was political retribution for speaking out against former President Joe Bidenâs border policies.
The probe leading to the historic indictment began before Adamsâ criticism.
Trump also continued his recent attacks on Mamdani, saying the socialist firebrand risked jail if he bucked an ongoing immigration crackdown.
âWeâll have to arrestâ Mamdani if that happens, Trump said.
The president also weighed in on the mayoral race, implicitly giving Adams â a Democrat running as an independent â his support.
“You would think that a Republican would be able to win, or you have a good independent running for mayor,â Trump said.
