Is the friendship between them coming to an end?
President Trump launched a verbal assault on New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, accusing him of “DESTROYING” the city by advocating for higher taxes. According to Trump, these policies are driving residents to leave the city in droves.
“Unfortunately, Mayor Mamdani is DESTROYING New York! It stands no chance!” Trump passionately expressed his disapproval of the mayor on Truth Social Thursday evening.

He further stated, “The United States of America should not support its downfall. The situation will only get WORSE. The TAX, TAX, TAX approach is COMPLETELY WRONG. People are fleeing.”
Trump emphasized that his administration “must change their ways, AND FAST.”
He concluded with a cautionary note, “History has shown, THIS ‘STUFF’ JUST DOESN’T WORK.”
Trump’s attack on Mamdani, who he’s maintained an unlikely friendly relationship with since the two first met in the oval office, came after New York Gov. Kathy Hochul proposed this week adding an extra tax on people who own second homes in the city worth $5 million or more.
The proposal would impact 13,000 units and generate up to $500 million per year as Mamdani presses Albany for a $5.4 billion bailout to fill a massive budget shortfall.
To fund his freebie-filled agenda, Mamdani has called for sweeping tax increases on New York’s highest earners, including on corporations and households making $1 million or more, among others.
He’s also threatened to impose a nearly 10% property tax hike if his demands in Albany are not met.
In his first 100 days in office, Hizzoner has backed new taxes that would squeeze a combined $23 billion out of even middle-class New Yorkers — despite his campaign pledge to only hike levies on the rich.
