On Monday, former President Donald Trump praised Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese for his adept handling of a sensitive situation involving Iran’s national women’s soccer team.
Trump took to Truth Social to share, “I just had a discussion with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese of Australia regarding the situation with the Iranian National Women’s Soccer Team. He’s actively addressing it!”
He continued, “Five team members have already been assisted, with others in the process. Some players are contemplating returning due to concerns over their families’ safety, including potential threats should they remain abroad.”
Trump concluded with, “The Prime Minister is managing this delicate issue exceptionally well. God bless Australia!”
Earlier in the day, Trump had issued a warning, stating that it would be a “terrible humanitarian mistake” for Australia to allow the team to return to Iran after the players refused to sing the national anthem in their opening AFC Women’s Asian Cup match against South Korea.
Following the incident, at least five players have sought asylum in Australia, after being labeled as “traitors” by Iranian state media due to their protest.
