Trump Steps Up to End the Crime, Homeless Takeover After Blue-State Leadership Fail

At a ceremony at the White House, President Trump enacted the “ENDING CRIME AND DISORDER ON AMERICA’S STREETS” Executive Order. This directive is designed to bring back “public order” to urban areas and address homelessness by rigorously applying rules against urban camping, squatting, and loitering, amongst other measures.

According to a statement from the White House, “The count of people experiencing homelessness on any given night in the U.S. during the last year of the previous administration reached 274,224 – the highest number recorded.” This statement emphasized that “most of these individuals are struggling with drug addiction, mental health issues, or both.”

“Nearly two-thirds of homeless individuals report having regularly used hard drugs like methamphetamines, cocaine, or opioids in their lifetimes.  An equally large share of homeless individuals reported suffering from mental health conditions,” it added. “The Federal Government and the States have spent tens of billions of dollars on failed programs that address homelessness but not its root causes, leaving other citizens vulnerable to public safety threats.”

“Shifting homeless individuals into long-term institutional settings for humane treatment through the appropriate use of civil commitment will restore public order,” it continued. “Surrendering our cities and citizens to disorder and fear is neither compassionate to the homeless nor other citizens.  My Administration will take a new approach focused on protecting public safety.”

One part of the EO essentially said it ends the “housing first” policies of numerous blue states led by failed Democratic leadership in places like California, New York, Oregon, Washington, etc. that “deprioritize accountability” and fails to “promote treatment, recovery, and self-sufficiency; increasing competition among grantees through broadening the applicant pool; and holding grantees to higher standards of effectiveness in reducing homelessness and increasing public safety.”

The Daily Caller’s Reagan Reese summed up the lengthy order below:

— The AG will work with the Secretary of Health and Human Services, Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, and the Secretary of Transportation to “prioritize grants for states and municipalities that enforce prohibitions on open illicit drug use, urban camping and loitering, and urban squatting, and track the location of sex offenders.”

— Funding will be redirected “to ensure that individuals camping on streets and causing public disorder and that are suffering from serious mental illness or addiction are moved into treatment centers, assisted outpatient treatment, or other facilities.”

— The order stops sex offenders who receive homelessness assistance from being housed with children.

— The order makes sure discretionary grants for substance use disorder prevention, treatment, and recovery are not funding drug injection sites or illicit drug use.

My RedState colleague Jennifer Van Laar recently wrote about Democrat CA Governor Gavin, who has destroyed the once Golden State, allowing crime to run rampant and the homeless to take over parts of the state’s great cities like San Francisco and Los Angeles.
