WASHINGTON — President Trump said Friday he intends to declare the Strait of Hormuz “a territory of the United States” once the war with Iran is over.
“After we finish defeating Iran, which is being very badly defeated — pretty soon I’ll be declaring the Hormuz Strait a territory of the United States,” Trump told supporters at a Long Island rally for Republican candidates running in gubernatorial and congressional races.
Trump’s tentative peace agreement with Iran, signed June 17, unraveled last month after Tehran sought to tighten its control over the strategic strait, including by firing on commercial vessels traveling through a sea lane favored by the United States.

The president had earlier suggested in March that the vital waterway be renamed “the Strait of America,” after US allies resisted joining an international push to loosen Tehran’s grip on the key oil and gas chokepoint.
